Stitched in Blue: A Portuguese Tile Journey
Inspired by the timeless beauty of Portuguese blue and white tiles, Portuguese Blues: The Custom Square Series is my way of stitching a month in Portugal into something lasting and handmade.
Portugal’s iconic azulejos have been part of its history since the 15th century. Influenced by Moorish design and European artistry, these blue and white tiles tell stories through pattern and symmetry. They cover churches, homes, train stations, and city streets — turning everyday spaces into something magical. People love them not just for their beauty, but for the feeling they create: heritage, craftsmanship, and quiet elegance woven into daily life.

hospitality. We also experienced festivals in more than 10 different cities, where each Festa proudly celebrated its region’s heritage, traditions, music, and what makes that place special. Everywhere we went, there was color, history, and a deep sense of pride.
This collection is my way of holding onto that feeling. Each granny square is inspired by the patterns and emotion of the tiles I saw — reimagined in yarn, one stitch at a time. As I crochet this afghan, I’m reliving the journey — and sharing it here with you.
